Student loan refinancing for nurses: read the forgiveness page first

Refinancing replaces your federal loans with a private loan at, usually, a lower rate. It also ends Public Service Loan Forgiveness permanently, and it cannot be undone. For most nurses at non-profit and government hospitals that is a bad trade. For agency travel nurses it is often not a trade at all, because the forgiveness was never available to them in the first place.

Before you read any further

Work out whether you qualify for forgiveness before you look at a single rate. It is free, it takes an afternoon, and it is the one decision on this page you cannot reverse. PSLF for nurses →

Rule yourself out first

If any of these describe you, refinancing federal loans is probably the wrong move.

You work for a non-profit or government hospital

Then you are probably PSLF-eligible, and refinancing ends that permanently. Read the forgiveness page before anything else on this one.

You are on an income-driven plan with a forgiveness horizon

IDR forgiveness is slower and taxed differently than PSLF, but it is still forgiveness. A private loan has none of it.

You might need federal protections

Deferment, forbearance, income-driven payments and death or disability discharge are federal features. Private lenders may offer something similar, at their discretion, and it is not the same thing as a statutory right.

Who it can genuinely help

Once forgiveness is off the table — and for a lot of nurses it was never on it — refinancing becomes an ordinary interest-rate decision.

You are an agency travel nurse

Your employer is the staffing company, which is almost always for-profit, so PSLF was never available to you no matter which hospital you worked in. There is no forgiveness to destroy, and traveller income often produces the credit profile refinancing rewards. This is the clearest case on the page.

You work for a for-profit hospital system and intend to stay

Same logic, slower. If public-service employment is not in your plan, the forgiveness path is theoretical and the interest rate is real.

Your loans are already private

Nothing to lose. Refinancing private debt into cheaper private debt is the uncomplicated version of this decision.

Questions nurses ask

I am a travel nurse. Is refinancing actually right for me?

More often than for staff nurses, and for a specific reason: PSLF looks at who employs you, and an agency traveller is employed by the staffing company. That is usually a for-profit company, so the forgiveness path most hospital nurses have was never open to you. If that is your situation, refinancing is a straightforward interest-rate decision rather than a trade against forgiveness. Check your own facts before acting on that — some travellers alternate staff and agency contracts, and staff periods can count.

Can I undo a refinance if I go back to a non-profit hospital?

No. Refinancing pays off your federal loans and replaces them with a private loan, and there is no route back into the federal system. This is the part people underestimate: it is not a rate change, it is an exit. If there is a realistic chance you will work for a qualifying employer within ten years, that possibility has value that a lower rate has to beat.

What should I compare between lenders?

Fixed versus variable rate and what the variable is indexed to; the full term, not the monthly payment; whether there are origination or prepayment fees; what happens if you lose income, and whether that is contractual or discretionary; and cosigner release terms if you use one. Compare the total cost over the term you will actually keep the loan, not the headline APR.

Does checking rates hurt my credit?

Most lenders offer a soft-pull estimate that does not affect your score, and move to a hard pull only when you formally apply. Confirm which one you are agreeing to before you enter anything. We do not collect any of this — we do not run quotes, we do not take your information, and there is no form on this page.

Are there nurse-specific options?

Some lenders position specifically around healthcare professionals and offer terms built for training periods and clinical income patterns. That positioning is worth something if it matches your situation, and worth nothing if you are simply being marketed to. The test is the terms, not the branding.

Why there is no rate table on this page

Refinancing pays referrers well, which is exactly why we put the forgiveness question in front of it and why we will not run a quote form. We do not collect your information, we do not pass anything to a lender, and we do not rank anyone by what they would pay us. If that ever changes, this page will say so before you act on it, not afterwards.
