Rhythm Practice: drill the rhythms before you meet them.

Identification drills across 19 rhythms, ACLS/BLS/PALS action questions, and six mega-code scenarios where the rhythm changes as you act. Known-answer practice — RN PocketPal does not interpret your patient's monitor.

Rhythm competence is built before the code, not during it. Most nurses learn rhythms from a stack of photocopied strips, then meet their first real torsades at 3 a.m. with a crash cart arriving and no time to think it through.

Rhythm Practice is drilling: known-answer strips, the action question that follows the identification, and scenarios that keep moving when you choose. It is study material — it never looks at your patient’s monitor and never tells you what a live strip is.

What RN PocketPal does

  • A 19-rhythm taxonomy that includes the arrest rhythms most study apps skip — VF, pulseless VT, torsades, asystole, PEA, SVT, and the AV blocks split out by degree.
  • Identification drills on known-answer strips: name the rhythm, then answer what you would actually do next.
  • BLS, ACLS, and PALS action banks written against the AHA 2020 guidelines, with a source line on each question so you can check the reasoning.
  • Six scripted mega-code scenarios where the rhythm changes in response to your choices — the closest thing to a checkoff you can run on a break.
  • A rhythm atlas that stays free: reference strips and teaching notes for every rhythm in the taxonomy, no subscription required.
  • A Compare view that puts a photo of your own strip beside a reference strip so you can eyeball the difference yourself. It does not measure, score, or name what you captured.

Who it’s for

Rhythm Practice is for nursing students learning rhythms for the first time, new grads heading into telemetry or step-down, and any nurse with an ACLS renewal on the calendar. It is study material — your clinical judgment, calipers, and facility protocol stay in charge at the bedside.

Rhythm Practice ships in the next release. The free rhythm atlas is available to everyone; drills and mega-code run inside Pocketpal Pro.

Frequently asked questions

Does RN PocketPal read my patient’s monitor or interpret a strip I photograph?
No. There is no rhythm interpretation of captured images anywhere in the app. An earlier version offered photo-based rhythm review; it was withdrawn in August 2026 because the underlying classifier did not meet the accuracy bar we set for it, and no amount of educational framing makes an unreliable read safe at the bedside. Rhythm Practice works only on known-answer study strips. The Compare view will show your photo beside a reference strip, but it does not analyse, measure, or name what you captured.
Is Rhythm Practice a medical device?
No. It is an educational study tool. It does not diagnose, does not evaluate a real patient, and does not replace clinical judgment, prescriber orders, or calipers.
Do I need a subscription?
The rhythm atlas is free — every rhythm in the taxonomy with reference strips and teaching notes. The drills, action banks, and mega-code scenarios are part of Pocketpal Pro, and free users get a monthly allowance of practice days before the paywall appears.
Where does the AHA content come from?
The BLS, ACLS, and PALS banks are hand-authored against the AHA 2020 guidelines and carry a per-question source line. They are study material, not a substitute for a certification course, and they are not endorsed by or affiliated with the AHA.
Does it work offline?
Yes. The strips, banks, and scenarios are bundled in the app, so drills work in basement procedure rooms and on hospital Wi-Fi that drops every five minutes.
What happened to Rhythm Reader?
It was retired in August 2026. The photo-based reader could not reach the accuracy we required — the trained classifier fell well short of our release gate, and the safest version of that feature was one that refused to answer most of the time. We replaced it with practice on strips whose answers are already known, which is where rhythm skill is actually built.
