A graceful exit when you need one.
Schedule a fake call, page, or silent alert. Convincing lock-screen UI gets you out of a hostile or never-ending encounter without burning the relationship.
The family conference that’s gone 40 minutes past time. The hostile visitor who won’t leave the desk. The patient’s aggressive boyfriend. The difficult conversation where you need a graceful out. Nurses run into these every week, and there’s no professional script that gets you out without it feeling rude.
Fake-a-Call was suggested by a charge-nurse advisor after a workplace-violence week. Set up a fake call, page, or silent alert before walking into the situation; tap to acknowledge when you need the out. The lock-screen UI looks like the real thing — caller name, ring tone, vibration. You leave the room politely. Nobody knows.
What RN PocketPal does
- Three modes. Voice call · pager · silent vibration. Pick the one that fits the situation.
- Convincing UI. Full-screen lock-screen takeover with caller name, avatar, ringtone, and vibration. Looks like the real iOS / Android incoming call UI.
- Custom callers.Save common “Charge RN,” “Code Team,” “Dr. Smith” templates with believable scripts.
- Scheduled or instant. Schedule a call to arrive 5/10/15 minutes from now, or trigger on a discreet button press.
- Script ideas. AI-generated suggested call scripts for common situations — overwhelmed assignment, charge bumping you to a code, family conference running long. Optional.
Who it’s for
Bedside RNs in any setting where workplace de-escalation is a real risk — ED, psych, home health, school nursing, primary care. Used in beta by RNs across acute care + one home-health RN whose “just one more minute” visits routinely ran 30 past schedule.
Educational reference only. Not a medical device. Verify with clinical judgment, facility policy, and primary sources. Read the full disclaimer.
Frequently asked questions
- Is this dishonest?
- It's a de-escalation tool. Used judiciously — to leave a room safely or to get out of a workplace-violence-adjacent situation — it's no more dishonest than the "I have to step out" we already use. Don't use it to dodge legitimate work.
- Does the UI look like a real call?
- Close. Caller name, ringtone, vibration, full-screen takeover. Up close, an observant person might notice it's an app, not a system call. From across a room, it's indistinguishable.
- Can I trigger it without holding the phone?
- Yes — schedule it 5/10/15 min ahead before walking into the room. Some users pair it with a Shortcut from Apple Watch / Wear OS for tap-on-wrist trigger.
